When it comes to wedding venues with character, few places compare to Merchant Taylors’ Hall right in the heart of York. Tucked away on Aldwark, the 15th-century Great Hall offers a breathtaking, historic backdrop for a wedding reception. I recently had the pleasure of providing the evening soundtrack and coordination for a wonderful couple here, and the atmosphere was nothing short of magical.

Complementing a 600-Year-Old Aesthetic
Setting up in a Grade I listed building requires a careful approach. You want the evening entertainment to look sleek and modern without clashing with the venue's ancient charm.
By using elegant, controlled uplighting, we were able to highlight the incredible vaulted timber ceilings and brickwork as the sun went down. It created a warm, inviting transition from the formal wedding breakfast into the evening reception.
Rather than constantly interrupting the music or overpowering the room, I provided tasteful, unobtrusive announcements to guide the guests. From formally welcoming the new couple into the room for their cake cut, to inviting everyone to gather around for the first dance, everything was handled smoothly. This allowed the couple to completely relax, knowing the logistics were taken care of, and keep their focus exactly where it should be: on celebrating with their friends and family.
Once the formalities were complete, the acoustics of the Great Hall really came alive. The dancefloor was packed all night, with a brilliant mix of tracks that kept the energy high right up until the final song.
Looking for a York Wedding DJ?
If you are planning your wedding at Merchant Taylors' Hall, or any of the beautiful venues across York, Leeds, Selby, and the surrounding areas, I would love to hear about your plans. At CAA Entertainment, I specialize in bespoke, elegant evening receptions where the focus is firmly on great music and a seamlessly coordinated night.
Enhancing the Atmosphere with Venue Uplighting
Because Merchant Taylors' Hall boasts such incredible architectural details—from the historic brickwork to the magnificent vaulted timber roof—it is the absolute perfect canvas for venue uplighting.
I use sleek, wireless uplighters placed strategically around the perimeter of the Great Hall. During the wedding breakfast, these can be set to perfectly match your wedding colours, washing the ancient walls in a warm, romantic glow. Then, as the evening reception kicks off and the tempo rises, the lighting seamlessly transitions alongside the music, instantly shifting the atmosphere from a formal dinner into a high-energy, vibrant dancefloor.
